Overview

OGN (OnGameNet) is a legendary esports broadcaster that has been producing competitive gaming content since the early days of StarCraft in Korea. As part of CJ ENM’s expansion into North American esports, I led the marketing effort to build OGN’s content brand and social presence for Western audiences — creating the strategy, the team, and the content systems that drove rapid community growth.

Within 9 months, OGN’s social communities grew by 600%, while our broadcast content generated 35M+ YouTube and Twitch livestream views and 4M+ VOD views across partnerships with the National PUBG League and Clash Royale League.

The Challenge

OGN had deep credibility in Korean esports but relatively limited awareness among North American and global English-speaking esports audiences. Building that brand required more than translation — it required a completely new content strategy built for Western platform behaviors and esports community expectations.

Key challenges:

  • Building social communities from a small baseline in a highly competitive esports content landscape
  • Managing a team of 15+ FTEs and contractors across content production, social, and marketing
  • Producing broadcast-quality esports content for two major league partnerships (National PUBG League and Clash Royale League) simultaneously
  • Turning live broadcast moments into evergreen content that continued driving views and subscribers after events ended

Approach

Community-First Content Strategy: Developed a content calendar that prioritized fan-relevant formats — highlight clips, player spotlights, analytical breakdowns, and community polls — over purely promotional content, creating reasons for fans to follow beyond match day.

Broadcast Amplification: Built a real-time clip and highlights pipeline that captured the best moments from live broadcasts within minutes and distributed them optimized for each platform (YouTube cuts, Twitter highlights, Twitch clips), dramatically increasing post-broadcast engagement.

Team Building & Management: Recruited and led a cross-functional team of 15+ FTEs and contractors spanning video production, graphic design, social media management, and community moderation — building the infrastructure for scalable content operations.

Partner Content Alignment: Coordinated content and co-marketing initiatives with National PUBG League and Clash Royale League stakeholders to ensure OGN’s brand was consistently represented within the broader league ecosystems.

Results

  • 600% social media community growth across platforms in under 9 months
  • 35M+ YouTube and Twitch livestream views across PUBG League and Clash Royale League broadcasts
  • 4M+ YouTube VOD views through post-broadcast content and highlights
  • Built and managed a team of 15+ FTEs and contractors delivering consistent output
  • Established OGN as a recognized content brand in North American esports

What I Learned

The OGN growth story confirmed something I’ve carried throughout my career: community growth at speed isn’t about posting frequency — it’s about finding the moments your audience wants to share and making sure you’re the one giving them permission to do it. The 600% growth came from mastering the art of the shareable moment.
